Spitfire day! My Spitfire flight was a 70th birthday treat to myself. I and my friends, all private pilots, flew down to Goodwood from our base in the Midlands. From the moment we walked into Hangar 8, we couldn’t have been more impressed by the enthusiastic and friendly – but at the same time very professional and efficient – welcome from the ground crew and pilot Tim. I had opted for the approx. 1 hour flight down to the White Cliffs of Dover and, much to my surprise and delight, Tim let me fly the aircraft most of the time. If you’ve read that the Spitfire’s controls are sensitive, it’s true! As you look out from the rear seat over those beautiful elliptical wings, it’s not hard to understand why the Spitfire’s manoeuvrability was so telling in combat. Back on the ground, the enthusiasm of the Hangar 8 people continue, with plenty of time allowed for photographs, etc. All in all, a wonderful experience, whether you’re a pilot or not. Andrew P |
