The history and heritage of Bournemouth

Bournemouth Airport (previously RAF Hurn) was a Royal Air Force station located approximately 4 miles northwest of Christchurch in Dorset, England. It opened in 1941, and was used by both the RAF and US Army Air Forces.

During the war, Hurn mainly operated as a transport and fighter airfield. In fact, it was the final airfield in England for aircraft flying to Morocco for the North African and Italian campaigns, avoiding French, Spanish and Portuguese airspace.

RAF Hurn was significantly expanded in preparation for D-Day. In April and May 1944, the Second Tactical Air Force began moving in. The first arrivals were 143 Wing of 83 Group, which included 438 (Wild Cat), 439 (Westmount), and 440 (City of Ottawa and Beaver) Squadrons. By the end of April, 124 Wing had also arrived, bringing 181, 182, and 247 (China-British) Squadrons to the base.

After WWII, Bournemouth Airport became Britain’s main international airport until Heathrow was established. Bournemouth Airport is now well located for Spitfire flights along the south coast of England.

The Isle of Wight lies out to the east with its famous White Cliffs of the Needles. And to the west there’s Old Harry Rocks, Portland Bill, Weymouth, Corfe Castle and the beautiful Jurassic Coast stretching down to Devon.
