what spitfire pilot training involves?
Before you begin your Spitfire simulator training, you’ll receive briefings about:
- The facility
- The flying equipment you’ll be wearing, such as helmets, flight suits and parachutes
- The flying techniques, procedures and emergency drills
- The aircraft’s systems
- The aircraft’s history
Then you’ll meet your pilot-instructor to discuss what you’d like to do on your flight.
Your initial preparation will be delivered at Goodwood Aerodrom in the Spitfire Mk IX simulator. After that, all Spitfire TR 9 training is given in the aircraft itself.
You must hold or have held a fixed wing pilot licence to book.

Below are the Spitfire training courses we offer in our Spitfire TR9’s. All options include Instructor time. The two conversion courses include all briefings and publications required.
Spitfire TR9 Conversion
This course is for pilots with little-to-no warbird experience. You can complete it as a full-time course, or we can build it around your schedule. We train you to solo standard.
£75,000 (+VAT)
Spitfire TR9 Conversion
Take off and learn the effects of controls in a Spitfire, as well as how to climb and descend safely. Familiarise yourself with the Spitfire circuit.
£37,500 (+VAT)
Additional Spitfire TR 9 Training
This is the hourly rate charged for the two-seater TR 9 Spitfires for any training required other than the Spitfire TR 9 Conversion Full Course or the Spitfire TR 9 Conversion Abridged Course. This rate includes an instructor.
£7,000 (+VAT)

CAA approval
Spitfires.com is approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to give training in vintage warbirds. The approval allows payment to be made for training on permit-to-fly aircraft such as the Spitfire under the Fully Remunerated Flight Training (FRFT) exemption.
