OUR SPITFIRE BASES

From defending industrial cities during the Blitz to fighting off German invaders in the Battle of Britain, the Supermarine Spitfire played a central role in protecting British territory during WW2. With our four Spitfire bases across the south coast and in Yorkshire, you can enjoy exhilarating Spitfire flight experiences in those very same skies!

Each of our Spitfire bases covers historic locations such as the White Cliffs of Dover, The Needles, London and Manchester. So you can choose a Spitfire flight experience that best captures the parts of WW2 aerial operations you find most fascinating.

Our bases also allow flight in unrestricted airspace. That means you’re free to try loops, rolls and other breathtaking aerobatic manoeuvres if you decide to take the yoke yourself!

Goodwood Aerodrome, Chichester

Formerly known as RAF Westhampnett, our main headquarters is the Goodwood Aerodrome in Chichester. It’s the last remaining operational Battle of Britain grass airfield on the south coast and the best location for Spitfire flights across iconic white cliff landmarks.

When you book a Spitfire flight experience from Goodwood Aerodrome, you’ll fly one of our Supermarine Spitfire Tr.9 interceptors. These were high-performance short-range two-seater trainer aircraft with outstanding aerodynamics intended to fast-track new pilots for aerial combat.

Which locations you visit during your flight will depend on the amount of time you book for. But whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed a flight across the coast – we’re only one minute away! And on longer flights, you can visit Beachy Head, The Needles or even Dover, all sights that victorious pilots saw as they returned home from fierce engagements.

As well as authentic Spitfire flights, the Goodwood Aerodrome is home to our Spitfire Mk IX simulator. It’s the only simulator in the world that can be used for training new Spitfire pilots. And with its real fuselage, advanced visual and sound system, and lifelike motion and force feedback system, the simulator offers intense wartime flight experiences to non-pilots too!

solent AIRPORT, HAMPSHIRE

Solent Airport is now a general aviation facility. But until 1996, it was known as Royal Naval Air Station Lee-on-Solent (HMS Daedalus).

The station was first set up in 1917 as a seaplane base. Later it became the main training and administrative centre of the Fleet Air Arm, the naval aviation component of the Royal Navy. As well as launching Spitfires and Seafires throughout WW2, this location has significant history as a key D-Day airbase.

Of all our Spitfire bases, Solent Airport is the best location for flights across the English Channel. It’s so close to the Isle of White that even the shortest flights let you manoeuvre along the white cliffs of The Needles. That means you can experience the welcoming sight of the British coast that symbolised safe return for thousands of WW2 Spitfire pilots.

The long hard runway at Solent Airport gives you the option to enjoy your Spitfire flight experience at any time of the year. It also makes this location the perfect place to train new pilots, as was its purpose many decades ago.

DUNKESWELL AERODROME, EAST DEVON

With the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site below and radiant emerald countryside above, Dunkeswell Aerodrome offers an unbeatable combination for scenic Spitfire flight experiences. You can take your plane above the rolling hills of Dartmoor before sweeping down to the rocky inlets of Dartmouth and Salcombe.

The Dunkeswell Aerodrome opened in 1943 as RAF Dunkeswell, a WW2 airbase that covered the South West of England. It was first used as a base of operations by the American United States Army Air Forces Antisubmarine Command, 479th Antisubmarine Group. From here, they flew specialised Consolidated B-24 Liberator Bombers over the Bay of Biscay to destroy German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic.

LEEDS EAST AIRPORT, YORKSHIRE

Spitfire flights from Leeds East Airport in Yorkshire offer the unique experience of Spitfire flights over key industrial locations that powered the British war efforts. As a base for night fighters that engaged Blitz bombers, the airbase formerly known as RAF Church Fenton defended populations across Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and the Humber estuary region.

But there’s a lot more to see than just production centres as densely populated cityscapes. As you move between urban monuments, you’ll pass some of the most beautiful countryside Britain has to offer. That includes the Yorkshire Dales, the North Yorkshire Moors and the gold-and-azure beaches along the east coast.

Another quality that makes Leeds East Airport so special is its history as a multinational airbase. British pilots came together with their American, Australian, Canadian and Polish comrades to resist Nazi invasion. The base was also home to the first all-Canadian and all-Polish squadrons, as well as the first RAF Eagle Squadron of American volunteers.

BOOK YOUR SPITFIRE EXPERIENCE NOW

Whether you want rolling hills or rushing seas, country settlements or urban centres, Blitz or Battle of Britain, we have the Spitfire flight experience for you. Choose your favourite of our four locations and book flights of up to 75 minutes to savour the thrill and history of WW2 Spitfires. As well as two-seater Spitfire flight experiences, we also offer fly-alongside flights for up to 6 people in a GippsAero Airvan. And, of course, you can hop into the cockpit of the world’s only 100% realistic Spitfire simulator at our Goodwood Aerodrome headquarters.

Spitfires.com offers flights and experiences around the UK in a number of locations. The headquarters is based at Goodwood Aerodrome, West Sussex, but wherever you fly you'll be able to take the controls yourself if you wish. All locations allow flight in unrestricted airspace so you will also always be able to try aerobatics such as loops and rolls if so desired. Goodwood is a former Battle of Britain Hurricane and Spitfire base, then known as RAF Westhampnett. It is the last remaining operational Battle of Britain grass field on the South Coast of England. It's location only minutes from the coast that allows all of the experiences on offer to be conducted in the very same skies and over the same land and sea that the Battle of Britain was fought over 75 years ago. Lee-On-Solent has significant D-Day Spitfire history and its proximity to the white cliffs of the Needles means your experience can be conducted around one of the most iconic land forms on the south coast of the United Kingdom. Dunkeswell was also a WW2 airbase and covers the southwest of the UK and Leeds East, formerly RAF Church Fenton is the best location for flights further North.
